VoiceThread: Collaborative Tool for Audio Presentation

VoiceThread is a software that allows users to create slides with audio presentations such as digital storytelling. VoiceThread includes participation of viewers to comment using audio recordings, writing text comments or uploading an audio or video file. It also has a digital library comprised of a variety of VoiceThread presentations where users can utilize as sources. Teachers then have a lot of options to use these ready-made works for classroom instructions and project ideas. Teachers and students can upload photos that they can talk about either individually or in groups.

Just the same as the usual web tools, there are pros and cons about this software. VoiceThread is web-based that requires no additional software yet secure internet connection in order to enjoy creating audio presentations at ease. VoiceThread is free and only takes few minutes to create an account but except for the educational version; it’s a bit costly for monthly subscriptions. Free accounts have limited access to premium tools. VoiceThread is also designed as a collaborative tool that acquires involvement of other users to comment on your presentation. It allows asynchronous discussions that pertain to a transmission technique that does not require a common clock between the communicating devices. However, it has incapacity to allow several users access the same account simultaneously. In a classroom setting, students then have the chance of overwriting and deleting comments made by others. The comments are not also delivered easily and right ahead that affects the free flow of communication through VoiceThread. One of the good things though is that it has privacy controls, comment moderation, and a system of identities that allows all students in a class to work with a single account.

In conclusion, VoiceThread is one of the best interactive tools online that brings online learning to a new dimension that outweighs its disadvantages. In order for the newbies like me to figure out the amazing features of VoiceThread, just feel free to browse presentations that have been already shared. We are able to look up easily for certain topics on its search tab.

  1. Today was the first time I used Voicethread and I love it! It is such a great tool for collaboration on topics and it seems like something that can be used to help out students whenever I'm out of class (i.e. when a sub doesn't give my actual lesson on my lesson plan. lol). GREAT tool.

  3. Excellent presentations using VoiceThread Ms. Maria! They were both done very well! I like how VoiceThread is more than just having an audio aspect of it. I loved that I was able to circle and point to things that I was talking about, to show the viewer exactly what I meant. I think this will be a great tool for the classroom. Great job!
